about

"Souls in Trust" sprang from its opening lines. The phrases had popped into my mind during a college class and refused to go away until I wrote them down. Fast forward a few years and I'm working on "Circuit". These words make a reappearance in my consciousness, but they brought friends this time and the lyrics flowed.

Musically, the song is a bit harsh and the guitar that is layered into the track can easily be mistaken for synths. The vocals are a bit droning and deeper than most tracks on "Circuit", but taking my voice down a notch was quite fun.

The message of the song is this: Our world continues to become more and more relativistic and unless we entrust our souls and our faith and our future to Jesus' care, none of the rest will matter.

lyrics

so much for peace, so much for war
so much for love, so much for hate
we cannot mend what we’ve destroyed
our weak attempts have come too late
so much for right, so much for wrong
so much for hope and blank despair
we don’t expect the end to come
we’re further gone than we’re aware

we destroy what God has made
and, in our science, think we’re safe
a reckoning is on its way;
judgment we do not anticipate

so much mistrust, so much for faith
so much for good, so much for ill
we have rejected what we need
our deepest longing: unfulfilled
so much for valor when cowards reign
so much for heroes, called villains now
our idols lack the power to save
our backwards world is falling down

in the end, what will remain
when all our pomp has turned to dust?
when will we place our faith in God
and to Jesus’ care our souls entrust?
