about

"Silent Betrayal" was written after I bought Assemblage 23's "The Storm" and read through the lyrics of every track. Somewhere along the line, I found myself feeling that there was some hopelessness in the album - like someone who wanted to find their way to Heaven, but did not know how. I wondered how many people who end up in Hell will be cursing some friend or family member because the person never spoke about their faith. Out of that thought process this song was born.

The speaker in the song is the person in Hell, so the lyrics should be taken with a grain of salt. No one is responsible for a person's eternal destiny except that person alone. Having said that, the sentiment resonated with me: could it be that my voice is the one that will get through to someone who will listen to no one else? I cannot truly say, but the question remains. The responsibility to speak when opportunity presents itself remains, also.

lyrics

you did not stop to listen
and you would not pause to see
the heart of your betrayal
was withholding Christ from me

now it’s over. now it’s done.
I did not reconcile my heart with the One
now it’s over. now it’s done.
I did not reconcile my heart with the Son of God

Christ died that I might live
and you never said a word
others did, whom I ignored,
but your voice I might have heard

in the last, the final judgment;
tell me who I’m to blame
for consigning me to torment
and damning me to pain
